The U.S. Coast Guard, Hawaii Police Department and Hawaii Fire Department are searching for a man reported missing near Cape Kumukahi in Puna.

The U.S. Coast Guard, Hawaii Police Department and Hawaii Fire Department are searching for a man reported missing near Cape Kumukahi in Puna.

The man was identified as 30-year-old Peter Mahoe, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Honolulu received a report from the Hawaii Fire Department about a missing 30-year-old man who was last seen between noon and 2 p.m. on Thursday climbing down a cliff face where he was picking opihi.

Mahoe’s all-terrain vehicle was found 200 feet from the area he was last seen. His family was also camping close by, according to the Coast Guard.

An HC-130 Hercules airplane crew and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point were launched to search along with the crew of the 110-foot Coast Guard Cutter Kiska, homeported in Hilo, and crews from the Hawaii Police Department and the Hawaii Fire Department.

Mahoe is approximately 5 feet 6 inches tall, has shoulder length brown hair and was reported to be wearing blue boardshorts.
